Previously, he covered Africa for Bloomberg News and Newsweek, reported U.S. politics for Reuters, and taught journalism at the University of Missouri. His work has appeared in numerous outlets including The Economist, The New York Times and the Center for Public Integrity.

Earlier in his career, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger.
