The Examination, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom that investigates global health threats, is looking for an enterprising journalist with a deep commitment to cross-border investigative journalism to play a lead role in facilitating deep, meaningful and equitable collaboration between news organizations and journalists of different backgrounds and resources. A key part of our approach and mission is to build partnerships with other news outlets to connect local crises to global ones, and vice versa. This position is critical in advancing our efforts to level the playing field in global collaborative journalism and achieving greater impact.
The partnership engagement specialist will provide research, reporting and other assistance to media partners from all corners of the world. You will need curiosity to uncover information – wherever it can be found – and a spirit of giving, providing resources, time and goodwill to journalists producing impactful journalism. This could include tasks like finding court records in different countries, organizing translation services, coordinating lab testing across borders, working with journalists on the ground, and more.
You can expect to work on long-term global investigations that seek to expose corporate and governmental wrongdoing causing harm to people worldwide. You will be a major part of each reporting team, leading on coordination, communication, and support for local media partners.
Tasks will include:
Co-reporting with media partners working on global investigations organized by The Examination
Providing research assistance, editorial support and other services requested by partners throughout the editorial process
Working closely with The Examination’s editorial team to foster and support story development for different news outlets, helping identify reporting needs and tactics for investigative projects
Providing training, administrative support, and non-editorial assistance as necessary, such as helping media partners work with specific tools technologies or on topics related Examination investigations
Conducting pre or post-publication outreach to government officials, academic or scientific experts, NGOs and affected communities
Desired skills and experience:
At least three years experience in investigative journalism and global collaborations. The candidate will have worked with journalists and newsrooms in countries other than their own.
Experience in international reporting and research; familiarity and comfort in navigating datasets, corporate and legal records in different countries
Experience in conducting trainings for journalists of different backgrounds and skillsets
Ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new reporting topics
An organized team player with excellent communication skills
Excellent news judgment
Passion for innovation with a creative and enterprising approach to reporting
Proficiency in English and at least one other language
Experience in business and/or health reporting is a plus
Compensation:
This is a contract position for someone based outside the United States, with an estimated pay range of $65,000 to $75,000 USD. The final figure will take into account experience, achievements and location. Please note that the contract terms may change depending on the country of residence.
The Examination is a fully remote newsroom with a commitment to invest in the careers of our journalists. International travel will be required.
